Two earth-rattling events took place on opposite sides of Planet Earth this afternoon, leaving many to wonder (1) if they are somehow related and (2) which will cause the most damage.

The first event took place just before one o’clock Eastern.  According to this report, the Democratic-led U.S. House of Representatives acted “with lightning speed” and “approved a bill to slap punishing taxes on big employee bonuses from firms bailed out by taxpayers” — namely, AIG.

The second event took place barely two hours later in the form of a 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck near the island of Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean some 2,000 miles east of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.
