Is Madoff More Trustworthy Than Geithner?

March 23rd, 2009 · No Comments

Should Timothy Geithner resign? Nearly half of respondents to an online poll conducted by the Guardian said they would trust Bernie Madoff with their money before they would trust President Barack Obama’s embattled treasury secretary.

The poll — which, as of this posting, was still running — offers two answers from which readers can choose when answering the Geithner-centric question:

  • Yes. I’d trust Bernie Madoff with my money before I’d trust this guy; or
  • No. He’s had a few bumps, but he’s still the right man for the job.

Why are so many people opting for Madoff over Geithner?  Perhaps, it’s because Madoff pleaded guilty and, as a result, people feel like they know the kind of person with whom they’re dealing.  Conversely, they have no idea how bad things might get with Geithner and, as a result, prefer to avoid him.
