During a question-and-answer session Tuesday afternoon with students at Missouri’s College of the Ozarks, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich dropped a bombshell: He predicted the rise of a third party by 2012 if Republicans don’t get their act together.

This goes along with Newt’s 12 solutions… I got a call from him, well his group, yesterday. They let you listen to audio from Newt then they ask if you agree, then will you give them money. I said I’m not ready to give anybody any money just yet. We’ve always given to the RNC, not last election. We did give to Fred Thompson, but that was a waste of money. McCain makes me ill to listen to with his ‘walk across the isle’.

I’m not sure I want Newt Gingrich running again for President. I’m not sure a third party would have much of a chance starting from scratch, but we might be willing to support it if the right man or woman is running. I like several Republican/Conservatives now, but it’s a long time before the cream really rises to the top.

Debbie — Newt would not be my choice as a candidate, because of his sordid past. I might, however, go for a good candidate who allows Newt to manage his campaign.

This would be a disaster for conservatives and the GOP. Remember what happened when Perot ran in ‘92?

Newt can’t be serious. He would guarantee the relection of the Teleprompter Messiah.

Depends upon how the proposition was sold. A lot of once-solide Republicans — self included — now consider themselves “conservatives first.”

The Republicans have a long way of proving themselves to me again. I am trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it would be healthy for this country to have a successful third party to break the power hold in Washington.

There are technical fixes that would prevent a repetition of the Perot scenario. For example: google “instant runoff voting”.

Electoral votes could also be apportioned according to the number of votes cast for each candidate on a statewide basis.

You just have to get organized and bug your state legislators into getting such reforms passed.

Counting on a recovery by the GOP is a big risk. W, the neocons and the congressional leadership spent the last eight years thoroughly discrediting itself with the voting public. And`the present leadership is an ineffectual, pathetic crew of fools. I’m thinking especially of the RNC Chairman, but the rest of them are little or no better.
