Justice David Souter to Retire at End of Session! (Updated)

April 30th, 2009 · 2 Comments

Souter and Ginsburg

In a bombshell tonight, Supreme Court Justice David Souter (above left) announced he will retire at the end of the Court’s current session, according to Greta Van Susteren.

Coupled with the fact that his colleague, Ruth Bader Ginsburg (above right), is battling pancreatic cancer, a disease that has a high mortality rate, tonight’s news likely means that President Barack Obama will be able to make at least two appointments to the nation’s highest court during his first term.

I am afraid two is conservative. I think it could be between 3-5 considering age and health. John Paul Stevens is a very old man who has sat on the court for nearly 35 years. I would venture his days are numbered as well.

Forgive me, Clay, but I couldn’t will myself to contemplate more than two appointments at a time. The pain is simply too great.
