Strike at Vance Air Force Base Ends After 14 Days

June 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

In an article published late this afternoon, the Enid (Okla.) News & Eagle is reporting that a two-week strike by civilian contractor employees at Vance Air Force Base is over and that the more than 700 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local Lodge 898 will report back to work Tuesday.

While the strike is officially over, a longer wait begins as the impact of the strike might be felt long into the future as I reported in a post the day the strike started:

Why is this such a big deal?  Because, with base closure discussions popping up every few years, labor strife at a prospective closure location can cost a community “points” with members of commissions assigned to evaluate whether bases should remain open or remain closed.  And there are other pilot training bases across the country where the Department of Defense might opt to relocate the Vance mission if things get too disruptive.

Cross your fingers and pray, Enid.
