UPDATE 9-4-09 at 12:11 p.m. Central: Just learned that the judge in the $27 billion environmental lawsuit filed by Amazon Defense Coalition against Chevron in Ecuador has recused himself. Details here and here!
In response to Chevron Corporation’s release today of incriminating video footage that appears to support allegations of bribery on the part of government officials in Ecuador, the Amazon Defense Coalition’s Karen Hinton issued a statement this afternoon in which she she said, among other things, the following:
“An appropriate investigation will determine whether the allegations are true or if they are the product of a dirty tricks campaign designed and financed by the company.”
That statement, of course, begs the question, “Who will investigate?” The Ecuadoran government? Talk about “dirty tricks.”
