Rule Change Could Make Death Panels Permanent

December 22nd, 2009 · 1 Comment

On the Senate floor yesterday, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) pointed out how a rule change contained in the 2,700-page government-run health care bill being pushed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is illegal and, if allowed to go uncontested, will result in the death panel provision of the bill becoming permanent.

In the 11-minute video above, Senator DeMint accurately points out that the Senate has always required a two-thirds majority vote to change the rules, but did not put this particular change to a vote amidst debate over the hotly-contested issue of health care reform.

In addition, the South Carolina senator highlights the disturbing language inserted into the health care legislation by Senator Reid that could make the impact of dangerous components of the bill — including death panels — permanent:

“…it shall not be in order in the Senate or the House of Representatives to consider any bill, resolution, amendment, or conference report that would repeal or otherwise change this subsection.”

Rule changes and language that prevents repealing or otherwise changing legislation?  That’s bad.  Very bad.

If you don’t want government in charge of your health care, CONTACT YOUR SENATORS in Washington, D.C., and demand they vote against this measure.  Doing so could save your life!

UPDATE 12/22/09 at 11:17 a.m. Central: I just heard Rush Limbaugh mention Senator DeMint’s story.
