White House Press Corps Emits Sucking Sound

December 28th, 2009 · 1 Comment

In the middle of reading a CBS article about President Barack Obama’s day in Hawaii, I think I heard a sucking sound — you know, the kind of sound that comes members of the White House press corps generate as they suck up to the current head of household at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Here’s why:

  • First, the headline instills a sense of suspense without giving away the story:  Ambulance Rushes To Obama Compound In Hawaii;
  • Second, the subhead appears a flaccid attempt to reinforce the president’s citizenship bonafides :  First Family Spends Christmas Vacation In President’s Birthplace;
  • Third, the story’s lead paragraph paints the president as barely one designer-cape short of a super hero for having “sped toward his family’s vacation home”; and,
  • Finally, the story contains two words — about halfway into the article — that, I suspect never appeared in the same context in any articles about President George W. Bush:  Reporters Laughed.

Of course, I could probably find more wrong with the article, but I want to keep the really tasty chicken tortellini soup I just finished eating from coming back up.

Graphic:  After citing the “super hero” treatment of the president, I couldn’t resist highlighting the “BARACK the BARBARIAN” comic book series from Devil’s Due Publishing, Chicago.
