Describing themselves as a global community of citizens and scientists making the world safer for future generations, the folks behind the web site TurnBackTheClock.org are sure to generate a lot of buzz during the next few day as they keep the world in suspense, wondering which direction they’ll move the hands on the so-called “Doomsday Clock.”
In a news release, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists said today they will move the minute hand of its famous “Doomsday Clock” at 10 a.m. Eastern Thursday in New York City. For the first time since the clock was created in 1947, the event will be opened up to the general public via a live web feed at http://www.turnbacktheclock.org/.
Factors influencing the latest Doomsday Clock change, according to the news release, include international negotiations on nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, expansion of civilian nuclear power, the possibilities of nuclear terrorism, and climate change.
I predict BAS will move the clock backward, saying that the world is a safer place with President Barack Obama in the White House. Of course, I don’t agree with that thinking, but stand by that prediction.
What do you think?
UPDATE 1/14/10 at 3:33 p.m. Central: As I predicted Tuesday, the folks behind the Doomsday Clock moved its hands one minute away from midnight, according to this news release issued today. Specifically, they cited a more “hopeful state of world affairs” in relation to the twin threats posed by nuclear weapons and climate change. The hands on the clock now rest at 6 minutes to midnight thank to the decision.
