Forecast: Cloudy With Chance of Sunshine Law (Update)

January 24th, 2010 · No Comments

Having worked as a public affairs professional for many years, I understand when I’m being stonewalled.  Such appears to be the case now:

  • On Jan. 11, I filed a Missouri Sunshine Law request with the St. Louis County Police Department;
  • The following day, I received confirmation via e-mail that the request I made Jan. 11 had been received and forwarded to the appropriate agency officials;
  • On Jan. 20, I sent an e-mail to the attention of Chief Tom Fitch, asking him to “Please provide an update as to the status of my request ASAP”; and
  • Four more days passed without a peep from anyone.

Now, I can’t help but wonder if someone within St. Louis County Government is uncomfortable about what might happen if Chief Fitch and his people comply with the law and fulfill my Sunshine Law request.  [Hint: It's St. Louis news with national flavor.]

I can’t spill the beans just yet, so check back often this week as, one way or another, I plan to let you know more about it.

UPDATE 1/27/10 at 7:45 a.m. Central: After two weeks of waiting for it, I finally received the information I requested from the St. Louis County Police Department.  Despite the fact that Keith Gladney’s firing from his St. Louis County Government job was an unusual event, I could glean no conclusive evidence from the records provided that anything improper took place.  Still disturbed by the length of time it took to receive the information, but that’s another story.
