Is Toyota Paying Price for Not Supporting Obama?

February 5th, 2010 · 5 Comments

Is Toyota Motor Company paying the price today for their executives’ failure to support Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign?  One might draw that conclusion after examining campaign contribution records on the Federal Election Commission web site.

Earlier today, visited the FEC site to find out how much money, if any, Toyota executives in the United States had contributed to Obama for America, the political committee that accepts contributions on behalf of the Obama presidential election campaign.  Unfortunately for Toyota, FEC records show that only two of the 151 executives whose biographies appear on the company’s web site today made contributions within the period Jan. 1, 2007, to Feb. 4, 2010.

One of those executives is Fletcher V. Davidson Jr., vice president and general manager of North American Parts Operations for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.  FEC records show he gave $1,000 to the Obama campaign Sept. 10, 2008.

The other executive is Wil James, senior vice president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Indiana, Inc.  FEC records show he gave a total of $1,500 in two contributions during the summer of 2008 while living in Southern California prior to moving to Indiana.

While these records do not prove anything sinister, they certainly make one think anything’s possible with President Obama.

I think there are far many more factors at work here.

Could be. Thought I’d just raise a question.

The Toyota assembly plant in California, one of eleven nationwide, closed due to losing money. It was the only unionized Toyota plant.

Ya think Obama Adm is ok with that?

That plant was one Toyota owned jointly with GM. All of the recalls at Toyota are likely Obama’s retaliation against Toyota for closing that plant and for hiring only non-union workers at the rest of their plants.
