Jo Ann Emerson Sponsoring Union Bailout Bill!

Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.)

Jo Ann Emerson is back in the news today as one of nine members of the U.S. House of Representatives sponsoring H.R. 3936, a $165 billion union pension bailout bill.  But why?

It could be that the seven-term RINO Republican elected in the 8th Congressional District of Southeast Missouri simply loves bailouts.  After all, she did vote for the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP) and “Cash for Clunkers”.  But I don’t think her love for bailouts is the main reason why she is behind the bill.

Instead, I think her sponsorship of the union bailout bill stems from the fact that she is married to Ron Gladney.

In a May 3 post, I pointed out that her second husband is both a Democrat and an labor union attorney for St. Louis-based Bartley Goffstein LLC and that, according to Federal Election Commission records, she has received campaign contributions from a variety of union entities, including the AFL-CIO and the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).  And that’s not all!

In a post one week later, I highlighted the fact that her husband represents 12 powerful labor unions, including the International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers for whom he serves as general counsel.

Furthermore, I mentioned she backed funding for costly projects — including the $170 million Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge (above left) and the $62 million Rush H. Limbaugh Federal Building (above right) — from which her husband’s union friends likely received great benefit.

So, the answer to the question is simple.  Congressman Emerson believes in bringing home the bacon — err, uh, pork — and putting it straight into her own husband’s skillet.

Hat tip: Americans for Limited Government President William Wilson who sent this letter to Congresswoman Emerson and eight of her colleagues May 20.

  1. Bob, I don’t think this is a Union Bailout bill. John Linder is also a sponsor. He’s the guy that wrote the Fair Tax book with Neil Boortz. I think someone has there wires crossed here.

  2. Here is the list of sponsors and Congressman Linder is on there. It looks to me like a list of mostly moderates from both sides and a couple of conservatives thrown in. I don’t think Mr. Linder would be for a Union Bailout. I watch Fox News all day and heard them mention Mr. Linder’s name and looked it up. I don’t think this is what they’re saying it is. Jo Ann doesn’t support this type of stuff and I know Mr. Linder doesn’t either. Here is the link of sponsors.

  3. Emerson doesn’t support this kind of stuff? You must not have read the post. She’s a TARP-loving, Cash for Clunkers-loving “Queen of Pork” with at least one bridge and one federal building — housing one part-time judge, by the way — under her incumbent belt. Plus, her name appears on the page for your link…right above Barney Frank and Marcia Fudge!

  4. Bob, I play close attention to the district where I live and I also follow your blog. I’m a conservative and I don’t agree with Jo Ann all of the time but the projects you point to as problems the people here like and are grateful for. I don’t think any of those things make her “pro-union”. She is also for free trade and that is the unions number one issue. I also greatly respect Mr. Linder and I don’t think he would be a sponsor of a union bailout. I know you like Bob Parker and I’ve met the man but he doesn’t present himself well and he would get wiped out by the Democrat running down here. I’ll continue to support Jo Ann.

  5. Frank, I would sooner vote for a member of Blue Man Group than vote for a RINO. By voting for her (and, perhaps, getting paid by her to monitor the web?), you only cause the cycle of pork and out-of-control federal spending to continue. So sad.
