Missouri Races Yield Surprising Poll Results

January 31st, 2012 · No Comments

Though the primary races are heating up among Republicans, the results of a Public Policy Polling poll released today prove money doesn’t always result in support — especially among those battling for the chance to face incumbent Democrat Gov. Jay Nixon in November.

Most surprising in the GOP gubernatorial primary — and the focus of the NBC Action News piece above — was the showing by Bill Randles.  With a year of statewide campaigning already under his belt, the Kansas Citian topped St. Louis businessman Dave Spence in almost every category despite the fact that Spence reportedly contributed $2 million of his own money to his campaign.

In races mentioned in the PPP poll results but not in the television news report, I was stumped to see Sarah Steelman place ahead of Congressman Todd Akin and businessman John Brunner in the race to face off with incumbent Democrat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill in November.

Likewise, I was not surprised to see Spence’s fraternity brother, Peter Kinder, ahead of a pack of fellow Republicans in the race for a shot at becoming the Show-Me State’s next lieutenant governor.  Thanks to his incumbent status and to articles like the one I published today, Kinder has higher statewide name recognition than any of his GOP opponents.
