Records Show Keith Gladney Firing Unusual Event (Update)

Less than three months after he had received a positive performance review from his superiors at the St. Louis County (Mo.) Department of Health, Keith Gladney was fired Dec. 23 from his job as an animal control officer.  Thanks to information I obtained recently via the Missouri Sunshine Law (See this post for details), I learned his firing was something of an unusual — albeit rare — event.

Why should anyone care about the firing of Keith Gladney? Several reasons exist.  For example:

1. Keith Gladney is the brother of Kenneth Gladney (right), the St. Louis man thrust into the national spotlight Aug. 6 after he was allegedly beaten by a group of thugs from the Service Employees International Union at a South St. Louis County health care town hall meeting hosted by ultra-liberal Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.).  Watch the video below that shows what happened to Kenneth Gladney after SEIU thugs found him selling conservative memorabilia outside the event at Bernard Middle School in South St. Louis, then judge for yourself whether allegedly is a term that adequately describes the beat-down.

2. Keith Gladney publicly criticized St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch and St. Louis County Counselor Patricia Redington for dragging their feet when it came to charging the individuals allegedly involved in the beating of his brother.  Later, he joined a nationwide chorus of conservatives appalled by the fact that the duo — formerly known as the St. Louis version of an Obama  “Truth Squad” — filed only misdemeanor charges ordinance violations Nov. 25.

3. Keith Gladney joined a nationwide chorus of conservative appalled by the fact that, on Nov. 25, Redington filed only misdemeanor charges — not felony chargees — against his brother’s alleged attackers.

Now, back to the issue of Keith Gladney’s firing.

Inside the packet of information that arrived in my mailbox a few days ago — a response to the aforementioned Sunshine Law request — from Dr. Dolores Gunn, director of the St. Louis County Health Department and ultimate superior of Keith Gladney, were two lists.

The first list contains the names of 482 individuals, segregated by department or division, who were employed by the St. Louis County (Mo.) Department of Health as of Jan. 1, 2009.

The second list contains the same breakout of information as of Dec. 31, 2009, and shows an increase — to 489 — in the total number of DOH employees.

In reviewing the lists, I learned that Veterinary Services — the division that employed Keith Gladney — began the year with 24 employees and ended the year with 30.  In addition, I learned that two VS employees whose names were on the list at the beginning of the year were not at the end of the year and eight VS employees whose names were not on the roster Jan. 1, 2009, were on the year-end roster.  That’s a net increase of six employees during the 12-month period.

Though the VS work force grew by 25 percent in 2009 and Keith Gladney had received a positive performance review only two months earlier, he was terminated for cause only months after he stood up for his brother, Kenneth.

Preliminary conclusion: Keith Gladney’s firing appears to be an example of how Democrats, in the words President Barack Obama’s deputy chief of staff Jim Messina used on the day of the Kenneth Gladney beating, “punch back twice as hard” against those who oppose their socialist ways.

UPDATE (CORRECTION) 1/12/10 at 11:22 a.m. Central: Thanks to Reboot Congress for pointing out an error.  The charges filed against the SEIU thugs were ordinance violations, not misdemeanors.

Getting to the Bottom of the Keith Gladney Firing (Update)

Less than 48 hours before Christmas, Keith Gladney was fired from his job as a St. Louis County (Mo.) Animal Control Officer, according to a BigGovernment.com article published the same day.  Why is his firing important?  Because, as you’ll see in reviewing the points noted below, integrity of government is at stake:

PUNCHES THROWN

First and foremost, it’s important because Keith Gladney is the brother of Kenneth Gladney (right), the St. Louis man who became the subject of no fewer than six posts on this blog after he was allegedly beaten by a group of thugs from the Service Employees International Union after they found him selling conservative memorabilia outside Bernard Middle School, the site of of a South St. Louis County health care town hall meeting hosted by ultra-liberal Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-Mo.).  And, in case you’re not aware, these events that resulted in only misdemeanor charges took place on the same day the White House told its supporters to “punch back twice as hard.”

PERFORMANCE NOTED

Second, it’s important because Keith Gladney had, according to the aforementioned news report, received a positive job performance rating as recently as October.

PUBLIC SUPPORT GIVEN

Third, it’s important because Keith Gladney alleges that he was fired after expressing publicly his support for his brother.

POWERFUL PROSECUTORS

Fourth, it’s important because Keith Gladney’s former employer is St. Louis County, the same powerful government entity that employs County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch and County Counselor Patricia Redington, two power brokers who were at the center of controversy (see this post) during the 2008 presidential campaign.

PALS

Finally, it’s important because the St. Louis County Department of Health, within which the Animal Control Division operates, is reported to have a close working relationship with SEIU Local 1.

In an effort to get to the root reasons behind the Keith Gladney firing, I launched an investigation today by filing a Missouri Sunshine Law request addressed to Dr. Dolores J. Gunn, director of the St. Louis County Department of Health, and two of her underlings.  In that request, made via fax and e-mail, I asked for two pieces of information:

1. A listing of the names of all individuals, segregated by department or division, who were employed by the St. Louis County (Mo.) Department of Health as of Jan. 1, 2009; and

2. A listing of the names of all individuals, segregated by department or division, who were employed by the St. Louis County (Mo.) Department of Health as of Dec. 31, 2009.

Stay tuned as updates will surely follow.

UPDATE 12/29/09 at 12:18 p.m. Central: Nearly 24 hours have passed since I submitted my request for information, described above, via the Missouri Sunshine Law.  I continue to wait.

UPDATE #2 12/29/09 at 6:40 p.m. Central: I received a reply from Dr. Gunn’s assistant who wrote via e-mail, “The Saint Louis County Department of Health is in receipt of your email.  The information that you requested is being compiled.”  Now, I wait.

UPDATE #3 12/31/09 at 3:03 p.m. Central: Moments ago, I received an e-mail from Dr. Gunn’s assistant.  She wrote:  “The information that you requested was mailed today, 12/31/09.”  Things are looking up!
